As an Irish surname Keon is a shortened form of MacKeon, which originally meant "son of Ewan." (See MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland.) I would assume that if you are named after a hockey player, that is the most likely derivation of his given name. There also is a possible Farsi (Persian or Iranian) derivation, and I think the name has also been independently invented in the African-American community as a rhyming form of Deon, but neither of those seems likely for a hockey player. Do you know anything else about this hockey player, such as his surname or nationality, that would help someone to track down the most likely derivation?
