Information about Annemund?
Does anyone have any information regarding the name Annemund? I posted about it about, oh, 2 1/2 years ago, and didn't find any information. Here's what I know about it:
  • It is masculine.

  • I think it's English, but I'm not sure.

  • It is borne by a seventh-century saint, see: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=1420
  • Any information would be greatly appreciated!Thank you in advance! :-)Edited... Could the Anne- part of the name simply be derived from the name Anne? Perhaps after the mother of the Virgin Mary? And that was adopted by the Saint as a name of respect towards Saint Anne? I'm assuming from earlier information that the -mund part of the name is definitely High German. Could anyone approve or disapprove of this theory?

For me it sounds totally old high german!
Its from the Bishop of Lyon.
His real Name was Dalfinus, Annemund was just his "Holy Name".
Anne was the Mother of Virgin Mary,
and -mund is from old high german: Protection, Protector.
    So it means Marys Protection.
In the early mid-age, People had too much respect for mary that they didn´t use her Name. Therefor they took her Mother`s.

I can't find the name in any of my books. The second part seems clear: Germanic, e.g. Old High German (OHG) "munt" = protection. For the first part AN I found several possibilities:
    - OHG "ahn," ancestor (originally a babble word, "Lallwort")
    - Germanic "an", to grant
    - OHG "arn", eagle, simplified to "an" This is taken from: Henning Kaufmann, Ergänzungsband zu Ernst Förstemann, Altdeutsche Personennamen, München 1968, p. 33Unfortunately I have no idea whether this has to do with the name you mention. Sorry.

I found that the French form is Chamond or Aunemund and the Latin form is Annemundus. I couldn't really find anything else except that Chamond is also a surname and region of France, but maybe that will help you in searching.
