This was actually asked by another poster a while ago and I answered then (as Lora): http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=777145&board=genBasically my answer is the same as Anneza's, but just to clarify further St Columba's mother was called Eithne (pronounced enya) and Kilmeny is said to come from the Gaelic Cille (church/cell) of Eithne.
Also James Hogg was born in the borders of Scotland and hence he used a Scottish not Irish place name. But then again Cille is common to both Scottish and Irish Gaelic, and St Columba was born in Ireland so it could just as easily be Irish.

http://www.islayinfo.com/islay_place_names.html gives:
'Kilmeny (G) church of, possibly, mother of Columba. Kil-MEN-ee'Islay is in Scotland, and I'd always assumed (from the poem) that it was an Irish name, but clearly not! As for who St Columba's mother was, and what her name was, I just don't know.Hope it helps ...
