Carolus is a Latinization of the Germanic Karl, from karl, "man", but in the sense of "free man" opposed to "slave" (because slaves were not considered people but things).

It appears that karl as word lived in north Germanic (where Scandinavian languages come), but disappeared in the rest of Germanic languages.
