In Finnish 'eno' means uncle i.e. mother's (not father's) brother and the ending -la refers to location. So Enola could be 'place where uncle lives'.

I've heard that Enola was originally an American Indian name, but since the names of Native Americans were not collected with very much care, many of the meanings were lost. Some people say this is just "alone" backwards, but the American Indian used names with much more meaning, and besides, why would they have used English names!?
