Cole
According to Wikipedia, Cole is "a Brythonic (Cumbric) name possibly derived from the Roman Caelius". The original version of the name is supposed to be Coel, with Cole the Anglicized version. Anyone know if this is true? TIA.BTW, I'm aware that Cole is a surname. I'm asking if it's also a Celtic first name.

Old King Cole? He is said to have lived in (and given his name to) Colchester, but I know nothing about his merriment levels in real life. The little Cole boys today would have been Nicholas 50 years ago, it seems; we don't have them yet where I live, but no doubt they'll turn up.

Old King ColeYeah, it was in the "Old King Cole" article of Wikipedia that I found the info pertaining to Cole. I wanted someone to verify if it was true or not. Oh well, it seems that no one knows.

The only way to prove it would be to have a written record: Caelius, formerly known as Coel, lived here. Or, indeed, Coel, formerly known as Caelius! Which is wildly unlikely ... and anyway, I can't see the point of assuming that the ancient Britons were so short of names for their royal families that they'd adopt Roman ones. Wouldn't that be like assuming that during World War Two people in the English-speaking world must logically have named their sons Adolf because it was a well known name that they heard on the news every night?
