Iorek
I'm curious about the background of this name. Aside from the character in the His Dark Materials books, Iorek Brynison, I can't find much. Though, there is a lot of information pertaining to the books to sift through, I could have missed something important.

Go back to Hamlet! "Alas, poor Yorik, I knew him well, Horatio ... "And both Iorek and Yorik are nickname forms of George, with the -k indicating a diminutive as it does in Jack.In the world of HDM, or in Lyra's world in HDM anyway, Denmark is a very prominent colonial power; making it a good idea to take a somewhat Danish name for a northern hero. I've no idea whether it exists and is used in modern Scandinavia, though.
