The original root is probably a lost hR, but there are a lot of ancient words related to the phoneme hari meaning yellowish or yellowish-green in Sanskrit, and with good cognates in Indo-european (in fact yellow is a cognate). hariNI meant a deer and that included a lot (including antelopes and beautiful young human females :-), but I doubt that ever included a female kangaroo! (or a goat or hare for that matter) unless that is a recent development in some modern Indian language.
