I think you'll find the name came before the duck!
Look up the ancient Greek poem, the Odyssey, for a very interesting Penelope who stayed loyal to her missing husband for twenty years in spite of being, still, so beautiful that large numbers of men kept trying to change her mind. She kept herself busy by weaving cloth, which is where your thread/woof link comes in.
