acc. to my name book Miles can also be a variant of Milo 'grace' (old slavic) or 'mercifiul' (germanic), this still doesn't give you a connection but maybe it helps...
maybe the connection is war (blood river and soldier?)
maybe there is someone the author knew with the name Miles Douglas or Douglas Miles
