Because if it was Buffy it would be a nickname for Elizabeth which is suitable with the last name Whitaker which is of Scottish origin and Buffy is a very English/Scottish nickname for Elizabeth. :)

But if the name is actually Bufree I have no idea. Peterborough? Maybe it's of Celtic/Gaelic origin?
