There's a surname Koteles - it's eastern European, I know there are some from Hungary, some from Croatia. And in immigration it's taken on a lot of forms - Kotelli, Kotelis, Kotelas, etc. My Dh is Hungarian-Czech but it's a bloody difficult language to learn - from what I understand it has to do with rope because there are various words kotel- that mean things like 'duty bound' or 'to take up the slack (in a rope)'. You might try a Hungarian or Eastern European genealogy site for a bit more guidance.
