Bascot
I'm reading a medieval mystery in which the main character, a man, is named Bascot. I'm guessing the -ot is a diminutive but what does the rest of the name mean?

Bascot comes from basc, "Basque", and the ending -ot (Occitan, Catalan and French), which is not diminutive but augmentative and in some cases despective; it is a hypochoristical suffixe, but an augmentative one and not diminutive, as could be -ic.In origin, Bascot was a surname for someone from the Basque country.

Thanks. I wondered if Basc- might refer to Basque but dismissed the thought because I didn't know people in the Middle Ages would be named for that group.
