What is the meaning of the name "Velva"?
While doing research on a family from Pie Town, New Mexico, I came across the name "Velva". It was the name of one of the preachers' daughters, who was born in the 1930s. The other names in the family were all established names (no "made up" names), so I assume that Velva must have a meaning, unless she was named after Velva, North Dakota. Even then you would assume that Velva, ND, had a meaning for the name.Does anyone have any idea as to what the origins of the name "Velva" is?Also of note, the person's surname is guessed by scholars to be of English origin.

It was the name of a heart surgeon in Cape Town 40-odd years ago; he was of European Jewish descent and the name is said in the family to mean 'wolf"; I think that it is a Yiddish word, but I'm not sure. One of his grandsons has 'Vel' as his middle name, in honour of his grandfather and to avoid "Velva', since "Aqua Velva" is the brand name of, I think, aftershave ... in which case the manufacturers were probably thinking about the way the sound echoes 'velvet' as CKE says rather than the wolf meaning!I imagine that the preacher whose daughter got the name was also thinking 'velvet' rather than 'wolf', but you never know.

Velvel (Yiddish: װעלװעל‎) or Velvl (Yiddish: װעלװל‎) is a Yiddish masculine given name meaning "Little Wolf" (from Yiddish volf, from Germanic wulf).

According to the following, the city of Velva, North Dakota was named that because of the "velvet-like" appearance of the surrounding countryside:http://www.webfamilytree.com/North_Dakota_Place_Names/V/velva_(mchenry_county).htmYou can't assume that just because other members of the family had "established names" that they wouldn't have created the name Velva on their own. The huge majority of parents have no interest in etymology or whether or not a name is "established" and choose names based on other factors. The earliest Velva in US Census Records on Ancestry Library seems to be Velva Warren, born about 1811 and living in Georgia in both 1850 and 1860.
