Hi Melanie,
Karsten (spelling variant Carsten) is a Low German version of Christian. The name Christian is used in Germany as well (German pronunciation: CHRIS-tee-yahn).
The name is quite common in the north of Germany and in Denmark but not so common in the south of Germany and in Austria and Switzerland.
