my fathers side of my family is pretty much gone from this earth.never got to know much of them growing up. now i have to boys that are in junior high asking questions about their last name and i have nothing to tell them, so please please any body out there that can help a single father with teenage boys wanting anwsers. thank you

You should ask in the surname board, but the US census records are informative. It seems to be a German surname, at least one person was born in `Hesse Darmstadt' and another was born in `Germany'.
I do not know what the surname means, but there seem to be quite a few families with this last name, mainly in TX and NY, and some people with that surname seem to frequent genealogy sites: you may contact some of them to see what you can find out.
