origins of the name derith
HI , I saw that there is an archived query about the origin of the name Derith. My name is Derith . My parents were Welsh and told me it means ' dorothy ' in Welsh and that the meaning of this is ' gift of god ' .I understand that there was another meaning " of oak ' but this meaning does not make sense to me .I would love to hear from anyone who knows what it menas or from other Derith's in the world . I have never met another Derith . cheers

Hi, I'm from Wales. I don't know for sure, but I think it's possible that Derith could have been used as a Welsh form of Dorothy (click on the name for the meaning, which you are quite right about). Derith is really unusual and I can't find any usage of it before 1924, but there were several of them born in the UK between 1924 and 1941, when Dorothy was popular, and it's not unheard of to find Welsh versions of popular names springing up. Oak is derw in Welsh (pr. DER-oo), so that's where that meaning comes from.
