Re: Finn (Male, Scandinavian)
in reply to a message by Lars
Roland Otterbjörk's Svensks förnamn says that Finn is the same as the English word "Finn", and that the ethnic name may possibly go back to an ancient word that meant "wanderer."

I've also read that Finn could mean "Saami" in old Swedish. And the Saami are certainly wandering, with their reindeers. It is carved on a rune stone "Finn ristade runorna" (Finn carved the runes)."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

Is that book available in English?

Not that I know of, but you basically find the same information in Hanks & Hodges's A Dictionary of First Names, which certainly is available in English. :)
