about the name Brían
Dear friends:
I'm in Argentina.
Last week, watching the transmission of the Tony Awards, I met a young actor whose name was written: "Brían" (with the "í" stressed), and I've heard he was introduced as "Brían" (pronounced [BREE - an] instead of [BRIE - an]. Is it possible? is he irish?
Thank you very much (forgive me, my English is poor).

I didn't see the awards, but I assume you are talking about Brian O'Byrne. He is Irish, and he does go by the name Brían with an accent & pronounced [BREE-uhn].Typically, the name Brian is written without the accent and pronounced [BREE-uhn] in Gaelic and [BRIE-en] in English, even in Hiberno-English. I believe the accent is used by Mr. O'Byrne to force the [BREE-uhn] pronunciation among English speakers.

In Irish name pronounciation 'í' is pronounced 'ee' so this may well be the case. Especially as Brian is an Irish name. And your English is fine by the way. :)Hope this helps :)
