I've been reading Max Beerbohm's Zuleika Dobson--entertaining, by the by--and there's a sentence which includes "that young brilliant girl, loved and lost of Giacopone di Todi". I've never seen the name Giacopone before, and I want to know what it means. I assume it's Italian, and Googling it brought up a St. Giacopone di Todi. Could someone tell me what it means, and what its English equivalent would be, if it has one?

I think it means "big Jacob".
Giacopa may be an Italian form of the name Jacob and I think the suffix -one (pronounced oh-nay) means "big".
It may well have been a surname first which was then taken as a personal name.
I may be wrong but I think it may be something like that.
