first name Clabe
Although I can find instances of people with the first name of Clabe, I cannot find any history for it. Does anyone have any ideas as to its orgin and meaning? Thanks.

Clayborn Baker (Clabe) McCarter was born in Apr 1879 in Virginia.53 He died in 1944.95 He was buried in McCarter Cemetery, Sugar Grove, Virginia.95 Parents: Levi Hickman McCarter and Evoline Greer.
So Clabe is used as a nickname for Claborn Clayborn by some people so could also be used as a full name

I have wondered if Clabe is a variant spelling of Caleb, but that is just speculation on my part.

Caleb is a well known name. I'm just coming across Clabe for the first time now. Personally i doubt if it could ever be a variant of Caleb.

Why do you doubt it as a variant of Caleb?
