Jean Harlow was born Harlean Carpenter and her mother was born Jean Harlow. Her mother simply took HARL from her maiden name Harlow and EAN from her own first name Jean and created Harlean for her daughter. When the actress went to her first audition on a dare, she signed in as "Jean Harlow," her mother's maiden name. In essence, she was using her own name in its original form.

Virna is a variant of Verna as already explained.
