You're right. The name Letteria / Letterio comes from of St. Mary of the Letter (Madonna della Lettera), the patron saint of Messina. According to tradition, she blessed the Messina ambassadors to Palestine, entrusting them with a letter of protection for all of the city. Name Day is June 3rd.
