Two questions
1. Would Polly be used on a baby born in 1639? I know both Molly and Polly are very old, but I want to double-check for my FF whether Polly was specifically used in this time period.2. Egnell (EG-nul) was the original company Mom got her breast pumps from (hence her business name for the longest time: Egnell Breastpump Rental Dealer). It sounds like a surname to me, most likely that of the company's founder. I was wondering what it means, if anyone knows. I've decided to use Egnell as a surname in my FF, and it'd be interesting to know what it means.Miranda

This is kind of late but..
Leslie Dunkling (British name historian) wrote in 1983:"[Polly was used in English-speaking countries] as a name in its own right since the 18th c. .. Gay gave the name to the heroine of his Beggar's Opera (1727).. Poll or Polly has been associated with 'parrot' since the 17th c."Dunkling says he personally checks out historical evidence of name use, but also refers to older name historians. No specific reference is given for Polly.HTH

I know for certain that Polly was used on slaves and indentured servants in the seventeenth century. So it WAS used. However, many names given to slaves were never used on those who were free.If you want proof from someone other than me, try and find some documents concerning the slave trade in the Americas.Egnul is a surname. I found this in a search just now: "(c.) June 14th, 1782, this is to certify that James Egnul Served as a soldir in my Company commencing may 16 Ending June 14th. Certifide by me." It is taken verbatim from a Revolutinary War muster roll.Egnell. Hmmm... I searched and found your breastpumps and little else. There were lots of ancestral and geneaological sites, but none that I saw contained meanings. But it is a ast name, at least.Sorry I couldn't help.Michelle

Hm, but my Polly's a white woman--British, to be specific. Oh well. I'm still not giving up the name quite yet, at least until I either get a few more answers here (or a sufficient time passes and it becomes clear no one else will respond) or find the answer on my own. It's good to know Egnell's a real last name at least. I've always liked Egbert (I know, I'm weird), and I thought Egnell has the same cool Eg- beginning but has a special meaning for me. I'll use it regardless, but, as I said, it'd be nice to know the meaning.Miranda
