In some parts of Greece (particularly in Mani, south of Sparta) Zani or Zanis is a form of John :)

That's the explanation I've seen for Zane Gray, the cowboy-story author. How interesting - I always thought it was, well, wild and Western - and it turns out the Greeks had a word for it after all!
