Ancestors' name...
While doing geneological research, I found my great-grandfather was named Ryal. Does anyone know the origin of this name?

Although a variation of Royal is possible, this is more likely a use of the English surname Ryal or Ryall as a given name. That surname comes from an English village whose name meant "hill where rye is grown", according to A. D. Mills' A Dictionary of English Place-Names.

Could it be a mispelling of Royal? That was fairly common from 1850's-1920's or so. Or maybe it's short for Ryland? Image hosted by Photobucket.com
