I don´t know if in English exists "aferesis" (in Spanish it does), therefor, Liam should be an aferesis of the name William (Wil-liam).

This site is connected to an online dictionary of name origins, so for the origin of Liam simply click on the linked name:LiamAs for "qualities a Liam might have", that is subjective and you would do better for that part of your question by asking what people's image of a Liam is on the Opinions board on this site: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/list.php?board=baby
