The -y spelling wouldn't happen in French, where it would be ami for a boy and amie for a girl, though to my knowledge it isn't used there as a given name. It is a surname in English.

I've only met one Bellamy, and she was a girl.

Belle is 'beautiful' in French, Beau for a boy. Amy, amie, ami would mean 'friend' or 'beloved', so the meaning is good!
