I think that phonetically the g+i (and g+e) work together to make a j sound. So the i (and the e) isn't sounded as a separate vowel, but it still earns its keep by modifying the consonant.

Your Julia reference makes totally no sense at all! Oxford must have been smoking its learned socks ...
