I would just add that "Crescentia" does indeed have something to do with "crescent", as Phyllis said. But it literally means (from the Latin verb cresco, crescere) "to increase" or "to spring into existence".
Which is exactly what the crescent moon (at least, when it's in its waxing phases) does. :)
