HELP give my father's name meaning
My dad has been trying for over 40 years to find a meaning to his name. His name is ELGART, but we do know of two variations of his name (Elgardt, Elgert). We believe the name is of German orgin, because his parents (my grandparents) were raised in a predominantly German community in central Wisconsin. They do not know the meaning of the name either, they picked the name because it was different for that time period (early 1940's). If you can provide any information, please email me at BABE_BLUS@YAHOO.COM. Thank you.

A few ideas:
1) maybe a form of Algar (click the name!)
2) or something formed on the Germanic element ger, gar meaning "spear". What something? Maybe al (= all), or aelf (=elf)... I dunno...

I wholeheartedly agree. The first part could be from:
'noble' - adal, æðel
'old' - eald, ald
'elf' - alfr, ælf
'all' - al
'helmet/protection' - helmThe second part is most likely:
'spear' - gar, ger
