In Afrikaans, the G in Agata (usually the Agatha spelling) is best described as "like the ch in Scottish 'loch'". The middle syllable is stressed and lengthened: ah-XAAH-tah.A friend of mine took a detective novel into the maternity ward with her for light relief and was startled when a nurse commented "I see you're reading ah-XAAH-tah Christie."
