In the African-American community this name goes back to the actor Mekhi Phifer. He was born in December of 1974 and his career began in 1995.

Mr. Phifer was evidently given this name at birth, but so far I have not been able to find any source that explains how his mother chose it. I have had someone who gave the name to their son claim it was a form of Malachi in a West African language, but no real evidence was provided, so I am skeptical of that explanation. I hope someone interviews his mother Rhoda Phifer about this some day so we can know the full story of the name.
