The reason that you have to follow a long trail for Jillian is that it is descended - via a long trail - from Julius. It has the same meaning as all names that are descended from Julius: "downy-bearded". It definitely doesn't mean "young pearl". Some people interpret the meaning of Julius as meaning "young" (as it is young men who have downy beards) but that is an extrapolation not a literal meaning.

Yeah, that's what I got too. Sorry Jillian that's kind of a crappy name meaning for a girl but I love the name anyway ;)

Yup, that's all there is to it. Although it's a slightly biased approach - it's more probable that Julius and the feminine form Julia emerged together, even if the male form is better documented than the female form. Regardless of whether the name is male or female, they all come from the same root word and all have the same meaning.
