It's just a masculine suffix. Plenty of Greek names end in -on: Agathon, Ariston, Straton.

Alexandrina, Annabella, Clementine, Charlotte, Emilienne, Florence, Frederica, Katharina, Mary (May), Maud, Penelope, Rosamund, Theodora (Teddy).
Aubrey, Axel, Benedict, Bertrand (Bertie), Cuthbert, Dashiell, Everard, John (Jack) Leopold (Leo), Magnus, Matthias, Maximilian (Max), Wilfred.

No, not the "t". Perhaps this name in fact derives from melissa/melitta "bee". But looking at LSJ, many honey-related words have stems with melit- so maybe I'm missing something.
