Esslyn
Esslyn is not a made up name. It is a Welsh boys name. My youngest son is named Eslyn, after his paternal grandfather, who had a Welsh mother. Grandad Eslyn was born in England. His mother named her son Eslyn after a childhood friend in Wales. We do not know whether her friend spelled his name with one 's' or two but grandad had one 's' and so my son's name is spelt the same way. I have always regretted not insisting on putting another 's' into his name as most people seem to struggle to say his name correctly, pronouncing it "Ez-lin", which is hideous.

One s is standard, and it is pronounced as z, as this is the standard English pronunciation of a medial s (as in housed). It may have been used in Wales but it appears to be Norman, related to French Aslin, a variant of Asceline or Asselin, whose origin is disputed and perhaps represents several older names — Anselm (Ans, As- or Os- "diety" + helm "helmet"), Ascelm (Asc- Ash-tree etc.), or from Asse, Germ. Atzo, a pet form of Adal- (noble, in the sense of having inherited land). An Azelina was the wife of Richard Tallebois in 1086, and Asselin, Azzelin and Azzelinus are recorded. The Asselin or Alselin who killed Hereward is a romantic fiction, and the Alselin form a misleading error. The Swedish Surname Aslin is topographical and has no connection.

Eslyn isn't a traditional Welsh name, though it may have been coined in Wales. It's very rare, and occurred as much in other parts of the UK as it did in Wales, which makes me think that it's probably an invention based on Emlyn (originally a place-name).

Is it a variation of ASLAN?
