My 2015 "spellings added together" list for US boys
Below is the list I have come up with by adding together spellings I believe are normally pronounced the same in the USA from the full Social Security data which includes all spellings given to five or more boys in 2015. This was created from all names where the most common spelling covered at least 1000 boys. There may be a few names with multiple spellings of just below 1000 that would make this list if I had time to do this for the entire data set. Though I think this information is more useful for many parents trying to judge how popular a name is before choosing one, there is always some degree of subjectivity and no two people would combine spellings in exactly the same way. For example, I do NOT add in boys named Tomas with Thomas because I think of the former as being accented on the second syllable and so being pronounced differently. Other people might add those two together.1 Jackson 26384

Thanks! It's crazy how popular aiden names still are. I wonder if many spellings makes a name linger for longer, because without many spellings, a name's popularity is easily discovered these days. I hope you're coming out with a girls list too?

Yes, I am planning on posting a girls' list, but that takes even longer because parents are even more willing to respell girls' names than boys' names. Plus it is harder to make decisions about where to put all of the ambiguous spellings. Are Miya, Miyah, and Miah alternate spellings of Mia or Maya, for instance? I have done enough of the girls' list to get an accurate top ten and will post a link to my newspaper column about that when it comes out tomorrow.

How did you decide which spelling to put on this list? The most common one?

Yes, the spelling on the list is the one with the most instances.
