Was watching one of my favourite shows today and there was a Gurkha with the name Jemadar. Does anyone know the meaning of this name or a name it may have been based of?
From the character's background and his profession I'm assuming the the name is Indian or Nepalese in origin although I could be wrong.

Persian jamadar from Arabic جاما (collection) and Persian در (having) through Urdu and Hindi jamadar, a low-ranking position (lieutenant) in British Indian army, meaning shifting to a menial worker/sweeper/cleaner in north Indian languages today.

So in Urdu and Hindi it wasn't a name but a position in the British Indian Army?
