"Maria" is obviously a Latin and Romance (Spain/Italy/Rumania, etc)language version of Mary, altho it occurs in other countries as well. Mikey C covers the name "Mary" pretty extensively on this site. It's a form of the Hebrew Miriam, which Hitchcock (the Bible name dude) and others say means "rebellion" or "rebelliousness".Other possibilities exist, but I lean toward Hitchcock, if only because he provides the only accessible full list of Bible names and their meanings. (Give the guy credit for busting his hump, even if it was 100 years ago).
