Mitra -persian, sanskrit = friend, companion, associate
Mitra - greek = womb
If we consider the fact that most mitreums were kept in secret and their locations was available only to the initiates, most of the time the location being under ground, I would go for the mitra = the womb. Plus, Mitra was born out of a rock, the Earth being the womb of his birth. The cave in symbolism it is often considered, the womb.
