CLARUS before St.Claurus (7th cent.) ?
I'm trying to trace back the name CLAIRE > CLARA > CLARUS, but have failed to get beyond St.Clarus, a 7th cent. bishop. Was Clarus used as a name in the Roman Empire? Is there a link for Latin names like LGPN for Greek names?

Probably not much use, but...Clarus was definitely used as a cognomen in the Roman empire:

Very helpful! Thanks a lot for your help. This answers my question to some degree, so I can at least say: the name CLARUS turns up in the list of Roman consuls in the first (or rather second?) cent. This is something.
Thanks also for the links! I had come across those consul lists before, but didn't think of them when I did my research (and finally got lost in google).

Yup, my bad. Of course it's the second century :)
