We live in Switzerland. Our grand daughters name is Saimi (born in July 04). Is there any meaning or history of this name? And how is it pronounced correctly? Thank you for your information. Best greetings Annemarie Heri

Saimi is a Finnish name, pronounced SIGH-mee. It became popular roughly a hundred years ago, and it's not much used these days. Some people say the name has gone through a sort of a small-scale revival along with the other romantic "granny" names, though.
As to the history, some sources link the names Saimi and Saima to the Lake Saimaa in eastern Finland.
