Message: "Gwynplaine?" - Behind the Name

Does anybody have an etymology for the name "Gwynplaine"? It's from "The Man Who Laughs". It looks kind of faux-Welsh -- "Gwyn" meaning "white", but "plaine" isn't a Welsh word. Any ideas?

Plaine is French for plain

There is an Arthurian character Guinglain (meaning 'fair jewel') who is the son of Gawain. Could be a mistake for that.
