We call it "trema"When I learnt French, those dots were called "trema", as in Zoë, Chloë, Zaïre and Citroën.Another way is to spell it Zoé."But it’s all right now.
I learned my lesson well.

So you got to please yourself."

Yes, it's a trema, which is used in French to indicate that two adjacent vowels are pronounced separately: "zo-EH"
I'm surpised that Zoé is a legimate spelling. In this version, he accent does create the 'eh' sound, but the 'oe', by French pronunciation rules, would be a diphthong.

In word, you can also try this:
ä= Alt148
ë= Alt137
ï= Alt132
ö= Alt148
ü= Alt129

The two dots are generally called an 'umlaut'. You can type this character in WORD by Holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys and typeing ':' (colon) followed by 'e'.

It's an umlaut in German when it changes vowel quality. The same accent mark, which occurs in many other languages, is called a diaeresis when, as here, it indicates that two vowels are to be pronounced separately.
