'I' is pronounced "eye" only in English (picture G. Bush ejaculating: "them madaudin' eye-ray-nians gonna become a nuck-u-lar power over mah dead body!")On a more serious vein, the name Irene and its offshoots are prononunced with an "ee" in most languages apart from English (ee-ree-nee in Greek, ee-reh-nah in eye-talian, ee-ren in French etc etc but eye-reen in English).Same with Isis - perfectly kosher to say Eye-sis in English, but its ee-sis in most other language. No idea how king Tut pronounced it 'tho.
