Danish would be a good guessI just checked google and it threw up a bunch of surnames, but all the Solmers that were given names seemed to be from Denmark.Andy ;—)

Danish???I'm Danish and there's no Solmer here. Just checked both boys and girls to be absolutely sure. Maybe as a last name, but I have not heard about it as a first name ever. It could be one of these really old, ancient forgotten ones, that is nowhere to be found on official name lists. That can only be my safest bet.- Charlie

I'm sorry, but I don't know any Danish. So I was just guessing, when I ran through some google hits. So maybe you can check these two:http://nkbib.nordborg.dk/vis_temp1.asp?id=305&menu=56http://www.dansk-kvaeg.dk/dyrskue.htm

Got your solution...Solmer is a last name. I can conclude that by looking at these web sites. The first is from a library and the last is an adress list from some cattle show.- Charlie

those are probably surnames. i noticed when searching at Google.com that Solmer is a surname and sometimes it was a middlename, well, it looks like it's a middle name, but some Danish people have two surnames, both their mother's and their father's. I don't know why and if it is a heritage from the old days, but i found that out when looking for the firstname Lie which i saw in an actor's name. Then, i looked at imdb.com and saw that it was not the actor's middle name but his mother's surname and this man was a Dane, so i guess in this case Solmer is the mother's surname of the bearer.

About the two last names...That is right some here has two last names. Either it's one parents whole last name, or if the parents aren't married, the kids get both their mother's and their fathers last names. It will mostly be the case if the parents can't agree on which last name the kid should have. It's not a heritage from old days.About Lie... Was you looking at Nikolaj Lie Kaas IMDb profile? If it was, then it is his mother's last name. And he is all through Dane and one of our most beloved and success-full actors of this day.- Charlie

Well, there is a German firstname Selmar, which seems related to Solmer, but Solmer is apparently only used as a surname. Though, there are also the Scandinavian surnames Solmsen and Solmsson, suggesting the existence of the firstname Solm, which is possibly related to Anselmus, but it could be related to the German name Selmar as well.

I should say: it is not German and it is not used in Germany either. To me it sounds a bit Scandinavian.
There are German place-names though with the element "solm". They all go back to names of rivers and "solm" is said to mean "swell" (and is obviously related to the very word).Andy ;—)
