origin of Caviness
I belive the name is derived from the French name of Cabanis, from LaSalle, Gard, FranceMy question is why and how did it get to be Caviness from Cabanis?
In my research, I have found Cavaness,Cabaniss, Cavenah,Cabnis and several other variations.Wally Caviness, emuwally@yahoo.com

There are quite often alternative forms of names where one consonant is substituted for another, and B and V are classic examples. Barbara in Russian is Varvara, D'vora (I think ...) in Hebrew becomes Deborah in English - and our lips and tongues are in much the same positions for the two sounds, it's just that the B is finished more quickly! So the V will just be a sound that your (English, presumably?) ancestors felt more comfortable with.
