Idris
There is a guy in my class whose fn is Idris (eye-DREES). He said it was Arabic but I didn't find it in the Arabic names section. Any ideas on what the origin or meaning of this name is? Thanks in advance.April

According to A Dictionary of Muslim Names by Salahuddin Ahmed, Idris is the form in the Quran of the Old Testament biblical name Enoch. According to The Complete Book of Muslim & Parsi Names by Maneka Gandhi & Ozair Husain, Idris originally meant "one who instructs" in Arabic.

Most interesting - thank you! I've only ever known the Welsh version. Fascinating how two identical-looking words can arise independently in languages that aren't even related.
