Re: PANDAV from Kathmandu
I have never heard Pandav as a name.A great epic of the Indian civilization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahabharata) centers around the victorious fight of the coalition led by the dispossessed five brothers called pANDava, the clear heroes of the story, against the prior dominant coalition led by a hundred brothers, first cousins to the pANDavas; a fight that almost destroyed the entire civilization.Like in many great epics, mystery surrounds their birth for a lot of generations. They, themselves, were born of two wives of a character called pANDu, a word of obscure origin that means yellowish white or jaundiced, who would die wehn he tried to procreate, and according to the then extant tradition, had children by his wives of holy men, or in this case, gods. pANDu's father likewise had him by his wife of a holy man whose unkempt appearance scared pANDu's mother completely pale, explaining pANDu's countenance. pANDava literally means decendant of pANDu, and could mean any of them individually. The oldest (ignoring a half brother born to his mother before marriage) was very just, the second was very strong, and the middle one was a great archer and wooer.I am guessing this story is related to the name.
