Though I must admit the "Tennage Mutant Minja Turtles" was very clever and rather funny (especially when I used to watch the show with my brother almost religously!), I think I may have something better to offer. Sorry Davidh!
Does your friend say her name liked it's spelled? Or does it sound like Min-YA? In any case, I'm guessing (more than guessing, I'm assuming) that Minja is an alternate form of the Osage (Native American)name "Minya" which means "older sister". Hope this helps.
